An 8-year-old boy from New Hampshire was tragically killed in what appears to have been a random shooting in South Carolina over the weekend, according to police.
South Carolina television station WBTW reports that a 40-year-old man, Charles Montgomery Allen, was shooting randomly at cars from his home in Florence, South Carolina, when he struck the boy and his father, according to Seacoastonline en New Hampshire.
“No reason. He’s probably on drugs. He has a record,” Florence County Sheriff TJ Joye told WBTW. “He is incarcerated now without incident. Just a senseless act.”
The name of the boy and his father have not been released.
Allen had already been charged with two counts of attempted murder prior to the boy’s death, as well as three counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to Seacoast Online.
It is not clear what additional charges he will face after the boy’s death, or if he has an attorney.
The boy was a third-grade student at Little Harbor School in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, according to Seacoastonline.
It is with the greatest regret that I share the sad news that one of our third grade students at LHS was murdered this weekend,” Portsmouth Superintendent of Schools Steve Zadravec said in a statement. “His family was on vacation and was the victim of a random shooting in South Carolina. An event like this touches our community as a whole. Our hearts go out to the family as we support each other through this incredible tragedy.”
He said there will be increased counseling support at Little Harbor School and that counselors across the district are ready to support any student or staff member who may need help.
